SUMMARY OF POSITION 

The Manufacturing Engineer will demonstrate leadership in communicating business goals, programs, and processes for an area or business segment. This individual will utilize experience or expertise to solve problems, develop and execute objectives for self and others, and can affect short-term and some long-term business goals. This position is in Northstar’s Engineering Department, and reports to the Engineering Manager.  The position works with all levels of employees throughout the organization as necessary but does not directly or indirectly supervise any other employees. This is a full-time position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Read and interpret blueprints, symbols and geometric tolerances based on military and commercial specifications
  • Provide manufacturing support to shop floor personnel
  • Prioritization and execution of engineering activities
  • Develop and maintain the production shop floor travelers/routers
  • Develop and maintain the production Manufacturing Operations and Tooling Drawings MOT’s
  • Develop and maintain the production areas manufacturing instructions
  • Assist with tooling/fixture design and improvements to existing tooling and fixtures
  • Evaluate and dispose of discrepant hardware including creating rework routers
  • Investigate and correct quality issues related to the manufacturing area 
  • Manage engineering and process improvement projects and status via the engineering RAIL
  • Provide document control support
  • Serve as technical liaison with customer engineering and quality personnel
  • Support the introduction of new equipment into the facility
  • Assist with lean implementation across the organization

  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, seeing, writing and typing
  • Occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds
  • Occasional reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, twisting, bending and repetitive motion
  • Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles
  • Frequent exposure to moderate to heavy noise
  • The ability to wear proper personal protective equipment, including earplugs, safety glasses, safety shoes, etc.
  • Visual acuity to determine the accuracy and thoroughness of product and/or parts

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED               

  • Education Required: BS Degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline
  • Experience Required: Minimum of 3 years of industry experience, preferable in aerospace

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED

  • Able to read Manufacturing Operations and Tooling Planning Sheets (MOTs)
  • Able to read blueprints and have experience with GD&T
  • Must be competent in CAD/CAM systems; competency in Unigraphics NX5/6 is a plus
  • Must be computer competent with MS Office, Project, and CAD experience
  • Must be familiar with specifications, and requirements for aerospace component manufacturing
  • Knowledgeable of aerospace welding, heat treatment, machining, and special processes
  • Documented formal process improvement experience; Six Sigma Green Belt preferred
  • Abide by established policies, plans, methods, procedures, deadlines, and priorities
  • Must be dependable, professional, flexible, have a positive attitude and a solid work history
